What customers say?

“ Wow, I was really surprised by this place! Even if I’m not a fan of the decoration, it has those vibrant Indian vibes. The staff here are incredibly charming and genuinely eager to satisfy us. I was impressed by the huge menu; they really encourage you to explore! There’s so much more than just butter chicken! I can’t believe it, but I think I’ve found my new favourite Indian restaurant! I can’t wait to dive into all the exotic dishes on offer! ”

“ Got takeaway for the family. The food is excellent quality and authentic. We had the chicken kebabs & onion bhaji to start, then chicken tikka masala, lamb byriani, dhal, and naan. Heaps of food (plenty left for tomorrow). Highly recommend ”

“ The food was delicious and perfectly spiced. We had a variety of dishes from the good old butter chicken (sweet but not too creamy) spicy fish curry and a vegetarian dish. We’ll definitely return again. ”

“ Fantastic local Indian restaurant in Maungaraki! My partner and I had just finished shifting a bunch of stuff into our house on Sunday night and realised we had not sorted dinner. After realising this, we checked the local township for anywhere open. Only the Spirit Of India was open, so we took the opportunity to try this place out. We had our choice of seating, and were warmly welcomed by the owner / chef. I really liked the paintings on the wall, especially the rainbow elephant, as I own a similar one. As soon as we sat down, we were given complementary popadoms, which was a lovely service detail. We ordered mango lassi to drink, which was very rich with mango. After reviewing the menu, we asked what the specialty dishes were. We were told that their Chicken Takatak was a more authentic Indian version of Tikka Masala, and decided to give it a go. We also got their Lamb Malabar and their cheesy garlic naan. All were fantastic! We really like the Chicken Takatak, fall-apart tender, and rich tomato and capsicum gravy. The Lamb Malabar was very coconut heavy, with both coconut cream and desiccated coconut, and the lamb had a toothsome chew, which was only a little bit more than I’m used to. Their cheesy garlic naan was tasty and special, though could have done with a bit more cheese. Presentation and portions were great. Overall, I highly recommend Spirit Of India to everyone, both within and outside of Maungaraki! We will certainly be returning to try their other dishes, including their other starters and vegetarian dishes. ”

“ Food was very good and has been improved since the original chef from the swagat has come back. We had chicken tikka masala which was freshlyade and had his trademark capsicum which is a little unusual however it's great in my opinion. The garlic nan bread was also crispy and hot. The food was rich in flavour and my medium spice level was perfect. ”

“ While there was a slightly chaotic start to the evening, this was a fantastic experience, and highly recommended. We picked Spirit of India for our wedding anniversary, and had a full meal (soup, main course, rice and naan bread, as well as drinks). We were not disappointed! The food was amazing - plenty of flavours, both blended and stand out. My main meal was slightly spicy, but not overpowering - I could taste all the different spices - and the chicken was wonderfully juicy. Definitely recommend the chicken and vegetable soup - so many flavours, and the vegetables were a great blend, including some crunchy (not over-cooked and mushy like you normally get); and a delicious peppery base. Overall, a great evening, and looking forward to going again! Thank you :-) ”
